Your sonographer will ask about your medical history and current symptoms, before explaining the scan. 

You will be positioned for the scan as required and a water-based gel will then be applied to the relevant area on your skin. The ultrasound transducer will be placed on the skin surface, with a dynamic assessment performed and images acquired as needed.  

During this scan, you will hear the audible sounds of the doppler traces as your sonographer assesses the blood flow in your vessels. Still images will also be taken at this time. Minor pressure may be applied with the transducer to obtain adequate views of your arteries and veins.  

The length of the test will depend on the region being assessed. For example, a scan of the neck arteries (carotids) or a DVT scan will take approximately 30 minutes. More complex scans, such as leg arteries or varicose vein mapping studies, may take up to 90 minutes. 

If you have a gender preference regarding your sonographer, please inform a staff member when you book your scan. You can request this for any ultrasound. 

Some vascular ultrasounds require specific preparation. These details will be provided to you at the time of booking.  

If your vascular scan involves imaging vessels in the abdomen, you will need to fast. This is essential, to reduce the content and gas build up in the bowel, which may obstruct the vessels from being appropriately viewed.  

For arterial studies of the legs, you may also need to fast as the vessels of the abdomen are typically included to eliminate the possibility of impairment to blood flow supplying the leg.  

Please wear loose clothing to your appointment. For some scans, you may be asked to change into a gown. You may also be asked to remove objects like watches or jewellery for your scan, so consider leaving valuables at home. 

Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment with your Medicare card and/or concession card, your referral, and any previous scans. If you have a child aged 6 or under, they must be supervised by an adult other than the patient.  

An ultrasound does not use ionising radiation, has no known risks, side effects, or complications, and these scans are considered very safe.  

Vascular ultrasounds do not require any specific after care. After your scan, you may continue with your normal daily activities, unless advised otherwise by your referring practitioner.
